What is White stick?

This is an excellent website if you are a real beginner with an interest in stuff to do with blindness and visual impairment.

White Stick is a website for visually impaired users, set up by a visually impaired person. Its aim is to assist users in finding information and give them the confidence to try something new in the world of IT.

Using White stick

As you’d expect the website is easy to navigate. Unusually each link is under a heading, with a brief description of where that link will take you. There are links to books, donation pages - for world causes, discussion forums/online chat and a list of websites especially gathered to aid VI persons. You can also look at games especially designed for the VI market, join mailing lists, download useful programs and much, much more.

Navigating White stick

As mentioned above, each link is underneath a heading, so they’re easy to find. It should be noted, however, that once you click a link- for instance "Audio books" or "Online chat" you will be taken to a page providing you links to several other websites where you’re information or resource can be gathered. Most of these haven’t been tested, so it’s difficult to know how accessible they’ll be. On the other hand, the majority of the websites White Stick links too have also been designed for the visually impaired so should be fairly safe.

Navigation suggestions

As this is a fairly clutter-free website I’d recommend reading through it first, then navigating by link or heading.
