Making Sense Of
Webpages
Whatever screenreader assistive software you are using, if you can’t see to use the mouse and need to use the
keyboard, you need a master-plan to make sense of web pages. You need to know which keys to press to:
Start your web browser with a web page open.
Find the website that interests you.
Find a particular word or phrase you are looking for on the web page.
Start reading the particular bits that you are interested in.
Read what you have found on the web page line by line or just listen to the whole thing.
Hear a list of all the links on the page and go quickly to the one you might want.
Go straight to the headline of the story or information you have chosen.
Go back to a previous web page.
Close down the browser.
All the screenreader packages let you do these things.
Some of you might like to study our glossary of Computer and Internet words to help you understand and get
familiar with their meaning. You might then like to look at the list of WebbIE browser keystrokes.
