What is Twitter?

Twitter is a very popular form of social networking. It, in essence is like a messaging service, where you have just 140 characters to convey your current mood, feelings or activities.

Using Twitter

There is not much point in generally exploring the website, at least not until you’ve registered, as even though you can click links, you’ll be asked to log in before you can actually do anything.

Registration

Firstly, find the link to "sign up now".

It is worth noting, that you’ll need sighted help to sign up as the process requires you to type in a captcha, there is an audio version but this doesn’t work with WebbIE.

Tweeting

To go over all of Twitters functions would be silly, as some people will use the service simply to update, others will experiment with favouriting and making lists.

When you write a message, this is known as a tweet.

To do this, log in, then find the first edit box. Type your message, messages could be something like:

"Morning all, time for coffee then taking dog for a walk."

"Feeling unhappy today, too much to do". Etc.

You can write whatever you like, as long as it's 140 characters or less.

The only issue here, is WebbIE doesn’t refresh to show you how many characters you have left, but if your tweet is too long, it won’t post.

Your tweets will appear in a timeline, along with those of the people you are following.

To follow someone, click on search, type their name or username if you know it into the box, then click the follow button underneath the correct result, this doesn’t mean they will automatically follow you back.

To unfollow, you select the person from your friends list, known as people you’re following, and select unfollow, or block if you don’t want them to see your updates.

The buttons are not labelled with WebbIE and Thunder, not sure if this is a WebbIE or Twitter issue, so can’t actually really follow people, unfollow or block.

Replying

When viewing your timeline, you may wish to reply to someone’s message, underneath what they’ve written is a link that says reply, after selecting this, go back to the edit box which’ll then ask for your reply, the 140 character limit still applies here.

Navigation

Twitter is probably best navigated by forms, as they’re generally what you’d use most. A fair few of the features aren’t really working with Thunder and WebbIE, and there are several accessible clients which most people use instead of the website, but these aren’t currently compatible with Thunder either.
