PURPOSE

To facilitate petitions to the heart of UK Government. Explains how to find out what petitions already exist followed by a description of how to vote on an existing petition and how to create your own petition.

ASSUMPTIONS

Running Thunder screenreader software from www.screenreader.net or any other screenreader software, the WebbIE browser from www.webbie.org.uk and with http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/ on screen.

What follows works well for those not able to see the writing on screen. If you prefer magnification, press Control + I (Image) when in WebbIE and you can select the print size by mouse-clicking on the magnifying glass at the top of the screen. Click on one of the other top of screen icons to restore the original size. Control + I toggles between the text and the image presentation of websites.

You can use the WebbIE web search facility to find the above websites or any other website quickly. With WebbIE on screen, type CONTROL + W (web search) and type for example "no 10 petition" then press ENTER. This takes you to a list of websites relating to that search. Press ENTER on the first one: Introduction to e-petitions | Number10.gov.uk and you will be taken to it.

If you want to read the webpage, press CONTROL + K (crop page) to take out the links to make a smooth read, then use the "Document Read" facility within your screenreader.

You will hear an introduction to the subject of e-petitions and the No 10 current petitions to the Prime Minister. If you want to use the links, press Control K again to restore them.

If you want to create your own petition, you will need to check if there is one there already. press CONTROL + F (Find on this webpage) and type "create" then press ENTER. Press ENTER again on the link to take you to the "create a new petition" webpage.

First you will be asked to search amongst existing

petitions to avoid duplication.

F6 (Function Key 6) takes you to the Search Box. Press ENTER and type your petition topic such as "Blind". Press ENTER again to get out of the search box. Cursor down once to "Submit" and press ENTER. This takes you to the webpage containing other people’s petitions relating to the word blind". You can either Cursor Down to hear it all or use your screenreader’s "Document read" command, but a quick way of getting to the petitions is to press CONTROL + F (find) type the word Blind" then ENTER. This takes you to the first mention of the word "blind".

F3 (function key 3) remembers the last word you searched for, so every time you press F3 you will go to the next occurrence of the word "blind".

You can sign up to the many interesting petitions. Because there are so many petitions, they are categorised under such headings as transport, education etc.

To explore the full list, from the home page, press CONTROL + L to bring up the links list.

Press V to hear "View petitions" and press ENTER.

CURSOR DOWN to hear the options.

When you find the category you want to follow, press ENTER. E.g. health, well-being and Care.

Press CONTROL + L, (link list) and then the letter L to hear "last". You can then CURSOR DOWN to listen to the many petitions.

ENTER on your choice and read the detail with the CURSOR DOWN key.

To add your signature to a petition: Press F6 three times. You can then either press ENTER or check you are in the right place to hear "I, Text input box 2" explore with the UP and DOWN CURSOR Keys before pressing ENTER on "text input box 2".

Type your name and press ENTER to come out of the text input box.

CURSOR DOWN to hear "sign up to the petition and CURSOR DOWN again to "text input box 3", press ENTER and type in your email address. Press ENTER.

CURSOR DOWN again press ENTER and confirm your email to prove you are a human being and not a computer robot. Press ENTER.

CURSOR DOWN to hear "Text input area 1", press ENTER and type in your address. Press TAB.

CURSOR DOWN, press ENTER, type your postcode and press ENTER.

If you are eligible to vote but live overseas, CURSOR DOWN to hear "Select", press ENTER. CURSOR DOWN to hear your status or country of residence and press ENTER.

Lastly, CURSOR DOWN to hear "sign" and press ENTER.

Creating A Petition

At the home page, press CONTROL + L to bring up the list of links.

Press C until you hear "Create a petition and press ENTER.

Now CURSOR DOWN to link 10, create a petition, and press ENTER. You should first have searched the site to make sure no one else has already created your petition. If they have, you could sign that one.

To check this out, press F6, Function Key 6, and press ENTER.

Type in your petition words and press ENTER.

CURSOR DOWN to hear "Submit, Go".

Within a day or two, you will receive an email confirming the acceptance or otherwise of your petition. At least 200 signatures are required. Your email and address will not be made public
