PURPOSE
Directgov is a hugely valuable website which brings together masses of local and central government information.
It is easy to use and a great starting point if you need to know stuff or have issues. You can sort out your bus
pass, make complaints, know your State Benefit rights and much more.
ASSUMPTIONS
Using Thunder screenreader software from www.screenreader.net or any other screenreader software, the WebbIE
browser from www.webbie.org.uk and www.direct.gov.uk.
What follows works well for those not able to see the writing on screen. If you prefer magnification within
WebbIE, press Control + I (Image) and you can select the print size you choose by mouse-clicking on the magnifying
Glass at the top of the screen. Click on one of the other top of screen icons to restore the original size. Control
+ I toggles between the text and the image presentation of websites.
To look up what organisations might help you as a blind person: when you are in WebbIE, type CONTROL + W (WEB
Search), then type "directgov blindness" ENTER.
This brings up a list of websites relating to that search. Cursor down the list to read the choices.
You will hear "Blind or Visually Impaired People Contacts, directgov directories" As the first choice. Press
Enter to get to that website. Of course, the web is forever changing so you might get something different.
You will hear "Blind or Visually Impaired People Contacts, directgov directories" again so you will know you are
on the right web page. Cursor Down to hear the general information on that web page and get to the alphabetical
list of organisations.
If you want to find a particular organisation such as the Royal Blind Society, press CONTROL + F (find), type
"royal blind" and press ENTER. Cursor Up then Down to read details of the Royal Blind Society, An organisation that
helps blind or partially sighted with cash grants to provide essential support for those on low incomes and by
providing a range of holidays and leisure opportunities.
If you want to find out about the DDA, The Disability Discrimination Acts, you will need to do a new search.
Press CONTROL + W for web search. WebbIE will remember your previous search so you will need to press ALT S for new
search and type "directgov dda" and press ENTER. You are taken to a list of options to explore with the Down or Up
Cursor. Try pressing ENTER on the first option. Cursor Down and start to read "Find out about the legislation that
is in place to promote civil rights for disabled people and protect disabled people from discrimination and
disability rights in everyday life."
Explore the webpage with the cursor keys and press ENTER on a line starting with the word "Link" if you are
interested in that particular topic/problem
